Maha govt employees go on strike over Sonawane's murder
Mumbai, Jan 27 (PTI) Over 15 lakh state government employees today went on a strike protesting the brutal murder of Additional District Collector Yashwant Sonawane in Nashik district two days ago.
"Over 15 lakh gazetted and non-gazetted employees of Maharashtra government went on strike to protest the killing of Sonawane. We have demanded strict punishment for the oil mafia who dared to set ablaze one of our officers," G D Kulthe, General Secretary of Maharashtra State Gazetted Officers Association, said.
District-level employees too held rallies and took out processions, demanding protection for government staff involved in risky jobs, Kulthe said.
The staff at Mantralaya (state secretariat) held a protest meeting. The employees had met Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Home Minister R R Patil yesterday and submitted a memorandum of their demands.
"We met the Chief Minister and he promised a high-level probe into the incident.
